Saint Anthony Hospital /Programa C.I.E.L.O in Pilsen/Little Village teams up with volunteer optometric services to humanity to provide awareness on vision and eye care
April 9, 2004--Who: Participants of Programa CIELO, an outreach program of Saint Anthony Hospital in the Pilsen and Little Village communities will attend a FREE 3-hour eye screening offered by Saint Anthony Hospital and VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity).
What: A one day screening will be offered to give eye examinations by professional optometrists. VOSH is a charitable non-profit corporation who has had missions to poverty-stricken areas throughout the world to offer eye examinations and treatment to people within those communities. VOSH has visited such countries such as Africa, Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, and the Philippines. The VOSH organization began in 1972 by Dr. Franklin Harms of the Kansas Optometric Association as the first vision care project in the United States.

Why: Programa CIELO, an outreach program of Saint Anthony Hospital, has worked with VOSH annually to educate the community on the importance of vision care. The VOSH program helps the community understand the link of vision care and diabetes, as well as other eye diseases and eye correction. These services are offered to the participants of Programa CIELO and for many they experience the first eye examination of their lives. Through Programa CIELO, which was developed by Saint Anthony Hospital in 1993, the programs, such as VOSH are offered to overcome medical barriers faced by many Latino immigrants and first generation residents.
